Lisa Thompson, NFC Art Instructor, Published Illustrator of Children’s Book Series
MADISON, FL (December 8, 2022) – North Florida College is pleased to announce Lisa Thompson, Art Instructor, is a newly published illustrator of the children’s book series Imagination Checkers authored by Christy Bass.
This being a first published literary work for Thompson, she relied on Bass’ descriptive writing style to develop the characters and setting for the book. “Luckily for me, Christy’s writing gave me the ability to imagine every scene in detail while reading the story,” states Thompson. “During my creative process, it was also important to represent diversity across the characters throughout the book.”
Imagination Checkers is a children’s book series that follows Cricket, Poppy, and Kyle as they dress up as unique characters to play checkers like it has never been played before. Comedy and dramatic climaxes keep young readers engaged as they follow the checker-filled adventures.
Thompson, a resident of Madison for over fifteen years, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of South Florida and earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Florida State University, where she worked as an Adjunct Art Instructor before working at NFC in 2005. Her professional career started and remains educating aspiring artists. “The most rewarding experience I have as an art instructor is watching students learn new techniques, become successful in their finished pieces, and seeing them grow in confidence.”
Thompson’s courses at NFC include pottery, painting, drawing, and design. Her instructional goals are to help students establish skills they either didn’t realize they possessed and push experienced students to reach higher than they thought they could. “Knowing that I was instrumental in a student’s experience brings me so much joy. Every semester brings new students, so the cycle of learning and joy is continuous.”
Her role as an art instructor allows Thompson to accomplish more than teach. “All I ever aim to do is make a positive difference in a student’s life. Perhaps art is a means of stress relief, an outlet for creativity, or maybe the art classroom becomes a safe place to express oneself and make friends.”
