Journey Around the World with the 2016-2017 North Florida Community College Artist Series
MADISON, FL – North Florida Community College is pleased to announce its 2016-2017 North Florida Community College Artist Series season featuring six highly entertaining shows that will take you around the world to Paris, Ireland, Russia, China and through the heart of America and beyond. The season begins Tuesday, Sept. 27 and continues through the end of February 2017. All performances are held at Van H. Priest Auditorium, located on the NFCC campus in Madison, Fla.

MEET ME IN PARIS featuring the Hot Club of San Francisco and French vocalist Isabelle Fontaine on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The acclaimed Hot Club of San Francisco and popular French vocalist Isabelle Fontaine take us on an unforgettable Parisian experience in Meet Me in Paris, a charming concert evoking the romance, charm, and vivre of Paris. Love songs and driving gypsy jazz are a combination made famous in 1930’s Paris by the legendary Hot Club de France, Django Reinhardt, and Stephane Grappelli. Following the First World War, the city was a gathering place for artists from around the world and The Hot Club’s unique sound of gypsy jazz reflects this inter-wartime collection of cultures. Keep time with the strum of guitars and let magical violin melodies take you on a ride down the Seine and through the heart of the city. Ms. Fontaine’s mix of sweet and sultry songs adds a touch of beauty and authenticity that echoes the historic Ville-Lumière, “the city of light”.

AMERICAN SPIRITUAL featuring Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. In American Spiritual, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem lead concert audiences in a bona fide revival. There’s no tent, no potluck dinner — and no preaching, unless you count the band’s uproarious and wise stories. Instead, this charismatic quartet administers songs and tales that explore and revive the human spirit. From a lush setting of Tennyson’s “Crossing the Bar” to old American shape note hymns, prison work songs, blues, gospel and original compositions, American Spiritual draws from 200 years of roots music to find songs that uplift and connect. Featuring bonus guest appearance by a local choir!

Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. A night filled with Irish stories, music, songs, dance and holiday cheer. Now in its 20th season, Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in the parish of Teampall – an Ghleanntáin in the west of Ireland. Neighboring families gather around the fire to grace the wintry night with the haunting melodies of traditional Irish Christmas carols, to raise the rafters with the joy of their music and to knock sparks off the flagstone floor with traditional dances, and to fill the night with the laughter of their stories. It will be a night to remember.

RAGTIME & BOOGIE-WOOGIE WITH PIANIST BOB MILNE on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. Bob Milne is considered by many to be the best Ragtime/Boogie-Woogie pianist in the world. He brings endless enthusiasm, enchanting ease of playing and an engaging manner while telling stories about Ragtime and Boogie-Woogie music with warmth and humor. The Library of Congress designated Milne a “national treasure” and he has served as a “musical ambassador” for the U.S. State Department in Japan and Switzerland.

RUSSIAN STRING ORCHESTRA on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. The music of this warm, high energy orchestra will stay with you long after the last note has been played! Founded in 1991, the Russian String Orchestra (formerly the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin), comprised of some of Russia’s finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky. Enjoy compositions by Rossini; Eskender Bekmambetov - “For Misha’s Gang”; Schnauber - “In Memory of Henry Temianka”; and Schubert - “Death and the Maiden.”
THE PEKING ACROBATS® on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. “Pushing the envelope of human possibility. Pure Artistry!" ~ The New York Post. For the last 30 years, THE PEKING ACROBATS® have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They are masters of agility and grace. Often accompanied by live musicians skillfully playing traditional Chinese instruments and high-tech special effects that coalesce with the music and awe-inspiring feats to create an exuberant entertainment event featuring all the excitement and festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival! Fun for the whole family!
The NFCC Artist Series season pass is one of the best entertainment deals in this region. Season pass holders can enjoy the entire season, all six performances, for only $65 (reserved seating) and are granted admission to the 2016-2017 NFCC Community Theatre performances as well as the 2016-2017 Live! At Dowling Park Artist Series performances in Dowling Park. Individual NFCC Artist Series tickets are $15 each.
NFCC continues to give discounted prices to NFCC students and children ages 17 and under. An NFCC or child’s season pass is only $40; individual tickets are $8. Those wishing to further support the arts and arts education can also become an Artist Series Angels sponsor. Sponsorships include season passes and additional perks for individuals and businesses.
