Dual Enrolled Student Spotlight of the Month –
Variah Dunnell
MADISON, FL – North Florida College offers a Dual Enrollment program that allows students to earn college credits while still in high school and at no cost. The NFC Office of Dual Enrollment is proud to feature outstanding Sentinels who are nominated by their respective high school guidance counselors. For November, NFC spotlights Variah Dunnell from Taylor County High School. She took a moment in between her high school and NFC commitments to respond to our interview:
Why did you choose to dual enroll at NFC?
I decided to pursue education at NFC because the college offers a great variety of courses that are geared towards my desired major. Dual enrolling at NFC has allowed me to obtain the course rigor and the extra challenge that I desired all while providing me with necessary support for success.
Which class have you enjoyed the most at NFC?
So far, I have enjoyed taking General Chemistry I and its corresponding lab the most. The overall dynamic of the course aids my learning experience because I am not only able to learn about topics during the lecture, but I can also investigate the concepts in the hands-on experiences in the lab. I enjoy collaborating with my peers during labs because it not only teaches me the core curriculum but also skills needed for success later in life, such as communication, teamwork, and the ability to resolve and work through errors.
How is NFC helping you reach your goals?
Since I was a child, I have dreamed of becoming a pediatrician. Many years of schooling are required to obtain this goal. I ultimately believe that completing an AA at NFC while in high school will put me on the fast track to obtaining my goal.
What are your goals after high school?
After high school, I plan on transferring to a four-year university to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and complete the courses essential to the pre-med track. After obtaining all necessary material, I plan to apply to medical school.
Who at NFC has inspired you the most?
Mr. Wilkerson has inspired me the most at NFC. His influence ranges from helping me achieve my goals in his course to those I have set in my everyday life. He has given me a ton of information that has eased my worries about applying and transferring to a four-year university.
NFC offers dual enrollment to students in Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee, and Taylor counties. A new dual enrollment student is featured each month and previous recipients can be found on NFC’s website here: https://www.nfc.edu/academics/dual-enrollment/student-of-the-month.php.
