MADISON, FL – North Florida College’s Public Safety Academy has received a Meritorious Award for achieving a perfect audit for fiscal year 2024-25, reinforcing the College’s role as a critical training hub for law enforcement and corrections officers serving rural North Florida.

The recognition was presented during the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission meeting held Feb. 18, 2026, in Lake Mary, FL.

A “perfect audit” means the Academy met or exceeded every standard required under Florida Statute 943 and Florida Administrative Code 11B, with no deficiencies noted. The comprehensive review evaluates course delivery, student records, financial compliance and training facilities to ensure programs meet the State’s highest expectations.

For the six-county region NFC serves, this level of consistency carries real impact.

In rural communities where agencies often face recruitment challenges and limited resources, having a local, state-certified training center ensures a steady pipeline of qualified officers who are prepared to serve close to home. NFC’s Public Safety Academy

has maintained consecutive successful audits since 2006-07, providing long-term assurance to area sheriffs’ offices and police departments that graduates are trained to the same rigorous standards as larger metropolitan programs.

This consistency translates directly into workforce stability. Agencies across Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee and Taylor counties rely on NFC to prepare officers who can step into critical public safety roles with confidence, professionalism and a clear understanding of Florida law and best practices.

“This recognition reflects the collective efforts of academy leadership, instructors, and staff who remain committed to accountability, professionalism, and quality training year after year,” said NFC Director of Public Safety Academy Rick Davis.

The audit process itself is detailed and far-reaching, involving annual reviews conducted by FDLE that assess everything from curriculum and instructor qualifications to facilities, equipment and operational procedures. Earning a Meritorious Award reflects not only compliance but a sustained culture of accountability and readiness.

That culture is especially important in rural regions, where training access can be a barrier to entry. By offering high-quality, locally accessible certification and continuing education, NFC reduces the need for recruits to travel long distances, helping communities grow their own workforce.

NFC’s Public Safety Academy is one of 50 state-approved criminal justice training centers certified by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. The program

provides foundational law enforcement and corrections training, officer recertification and continuing workforce education, all designed to meet evolving workforce demands.

The Academy’s recognition comes at a time when collaboration across Florida’s training centers remains essential to maintaining consistent, high-quality standards statewide. Through ongoing coordination with state partners, NFC continues to align its programs with regulatory expectations while addressing the unique needs of rural communities.

Further strengthening that statewide collaboration, NFC Director of Public Safety Programs Rick Davis was elected Chair of the Florida Criminal Justice Training Center Directors Association during its Feb. 18 business meeting in Lake Mary. The Association represents all 50 state-approved training centers and serves as an advisory voice on program standards, planning and workforce alignment.

Davis’ appointment positions North Florida College at the forefront of conversations shaping criminal justice training across Florida, ensuring that the needs of rural communities remain part of statewide decision-making. His leadership helps reinforce NFC’s role not only as a regional training provider, but as a contributor to the policies and practices that guide how officers are trained throughout the state.

For individuals considering a career in public safety, NFC offers a direct pathway into a profession rooted in service, stability and community impact, right here in North Florida.
