MADISON, FL — North Florida College formally recognized academic excellence, leadership and service during its 2026 Honors Convocation, an annual academic tradition that highlights student achievement across disciplines and celebrates the intellectual and civic contributions of the College’s student body.

Held on campus this spring, the ceremony brought together faculty, staff, families and community members to honor students whose work reflects both scholarly rigor and a commitment to meaningful engagement within the College and the broader community.

This year’s convocation recognized students representing a wide range of academic and workforce programs, underscoring the depth and diversity of opportunity available at North Florida College. Awards were presented across disciplines including nursing, business, mathematics, science, workforce trades and student organizations, each reflecting high levels of achievement and dedication.

Lillian Clay Named 2026 Student of the Year

North Florida College’s highest student honor, Student of the Year, was awarded to Lillian Clay of Suwannee County, recognizing her sustained academic excellence, leadership and engagement throughout her time at NFC.

Student of the Year represents the highest standard of achievement at the College. Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.75 GPA, complete significant coursework across both fall and spring semesters and demonstrate sustained commitment through at least 30 earned credit hours. Beyond academics, the honor reflects leadership, service, character and a genuine investment in the life of the College.

Clay’s record reflects excellence across all of these areas. As Student Government Association President, she strengthened student representation through professionalism, structure and a clear commitment to student voice. Her leadership extended into the community, where she helped launch a distracted driving awareness initiative and developed a one-day leadership experience for local high school students.

Her involvement across campus has been both broad and impactful. From organizing student events to supporting peers as a tutor in the library, Clay has contributed to a vibrant and connected student experience. Academically, she distinguished herself further by earning first place at the Florida Debate competition in Tallahassee, representing North Florida College with professionalism and skill.

“What stands out most is not just what she has accomplished, but how she has done it,” said NFC Dean of Workforce and Economic Initiatives Chief Academic Officer David Dunkle. “She leads with integrity, serves with purpose and consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence that reflects the very best of North Florida College.”

Recognizing Partnership and Community Impact

The 2026 Friend of the College award was presented to Mr. Ed Poppell, whose continued support has made a lasting impact on North Florida College’s Allied Health and Nursing programs.

“It is my honor to present one of North Florida College’s most meaningful recognitions: the NFC Friend of the College Award,” said NFC President Dr. Jennifer Page. “Tonight, we recognize Ed Poppell, whose support has made a lasting impact on our Allied Health and Nursing programs. His commitment helps ensure that our students are prepared to serve and strengthen the healthcare of our communities.”

While Poppell was unable to attend the ceremony, the College looks forward to recognizing him in person at commencement.
