Lafayette County student is first recipient of Gerstmyer Scholarship at North Florida College
MADISON, FL (November, 2, 2022) – The North Florida College Foundation is pleased to announce Michael Smith as the first recipient of the John Lee Gerstmyer Memorial scholarship. Established in August 2021, this endowment provides a perpetual gift to students attending NFC.
Mayo resident and recent Lafayette High School graduate Michael Smith is a freshman at NFC pursuing his Associate in Arts degree. Michael is still deciding what he would like to do after college, but is currently considering a career in teaching, culinary arts, or youth ministry.
Michael is an active member of Brewer Lake Baptist Church where he serves as a sound technician on the audio-visual team and volunteers in the youth group. He has also worked as a counselor for Camp Connexion, a summer Bible camp for children.
Like many NFC students, Michael is taking advantage of online and hybrid (partially online) courses that allow him to manage a busy schedule that includes attending classes, working at a local restaurant, and spending time with his family. With the mixture of course types available, Michael has also been able to enroll in a traditional class and enjoy the campus experience.
“It is a joy to see students like Michael receive the support they need to start their journey into higher education,” said Traci McClung, Director of Resource Development at NFC. “We understand that many students worry about affording college, but generous donors continue to help make dreams possible at NFC.”
