Opportunities for Students
The STEM SEALs project is designed to allow middle school students in the North Florida
service communities to participate in an immersive hands-on Summer Institute where
they can explore STEM through competitive Design Challenges. The challenges are designed
to incorporate four components: engineering design, technology and society, electrical
knowledge, and computer science.
Design Challenges:
The Design Challenges will revolve around three areas:
- SEA Challenges using ROV’s (robotic operating vehicles)
- AIR Challenges utilizing UAS’s (unmanned aerial systems/drones)
- LAND Challenges with robots (autonomous ground vehicles)
For the LAND Challenge Summer Institute 2023, students will learn many aspects of
autonomous robotic vehicles. Each student will receive a kit to build their own robotic
rover that can operate autonomously or using a remote-control. Activities for the
six-day camp will include the use of microprocessors, electric motors, sensors, actuators,
navigation, and coding. During the week students will test the devices, improve, and
modify them. After preparation under the guidance of local educators and college faculty,
students will compete with their peers to display the skills learned throughout the
camp.
Transportation to the camp may be provided or compensation for travel. Students will
need to bring a lunch daily.
What are the requirements to attend the one-week Summer Institute?
- Are you interested in one or more STEM disciplines? (Science, Math, Engineering, or
Technology)
- Are you in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade?
- Do you attend a public or private school, or home-schooled in one of the Six Florida
counties: Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Taylor, or Suwannee?
- Have you filled out an online Interest Survey? Interest Survey Link
